Modeling the Performance of an Integrated Battery and Electrolyzer System

Both daily and seasonal fluctuations of renewable power sources will require large-scale energy storage technologies. A recently developed integrated battery electrolyzer system, called battolyser, fulfills both time-scale requirements. Here, we develop a macroscopic COMSOL Multiphysics model to quantify the energetic efficiency battolyser prototype that, for first time, integrates functionality nickel–iron an alkaline electrolyzer. The current has rated capacity 5 Ah, larger, enhanced it is necessary characterize processes occurring within optimize individual components battolyser. Therefore, there need that can provide fast screening on how properties influence overall prototype. validated using experimental results, new configurations are compared, optimized scale-up this lab-scale device. Based modeling work, find optimum electrode thickness nickel 3 2.25 mm iron with optimal porosities in range void fraction 0.15–0.35.
